Kentucky Guide Program

The Kentucky Guide Program was established in 1979 to promote the use of primary source materials housed in archival and manuscript repositories throughout Kentucky. Collections at nearly 300 archives, libraries, universities, historical societies, museums, historical sites, religious institutions, government agencies, and other institutions have been surveyed and described. The collections include such historical source materials as government records, personal papers, records of private organizations and institutions, photographs, maps, and oral history recordings. The collections do not include rare books, artifacts, newspapers, microfilm copies of original records, or any published materials.

Suggestions for Searching the Kentucky Guide Database

RLIN AMC Search Form

Nearly 14,000 descriptions from the Kentucky Guide Program currently make up the Kentucky Guide Database. The Guide Database is part of the Research Libraries Information Network Archives and Manuscripts file (RLIN AMC), which contains over 400,000 descriptions of collections from institutions worldwide. The Kentucky Guide Database and RLIN AMC are searchable via the Library of Congress Web Gateway.

The Kentucky State Archives Catalog contains over 10,000 Kentucky Guide descriptions for records held in the State Archives. These include state and local government records of Kentucky.

Maintaining and expanding the Kentucky Guide Database, updating its descriptive records and providing reference service are the primary activities of the Kentucky Guide Program. Submissions by Kentucky institutions are encouraged.
