Job Duties:

-The Librarian II is responsible for administrative and professional library work of moderate difficulty assisting in managing the operation of a branch library or large department in the Central Library, or managing a smaller specialized collection or operation at the Central Library.

-The Librarian II is responsible for scheduling adequate and appropriate staff and assisting the unit manager in providing quality public service.

- Additional responsibilities may include managing the reference collection, periodical collection, and vertical file; contributing to collection development planning, adult programming, and adult book display.

- Work may be performed in public and non-public areas; hours of work are dependent upon the service hours of the particular unit. Incumbents are required to work a flexible schedule, which includes evenings, Saturdays and Sundays in support of public service hours.

- Work in this class is distinguished from Librarian I by the added responsibility of supervising the professional, paraprofessional, and/or clerical staff of a Library unit as an assistant manager and in undertaking moderately difficult administrative duties.

- SUPERVISION RECEIVED Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian assigned to a higher class.

- The Librarian II classification has considerable professional freedom to make decisions regarding their assigned area.

- SUPERVISION EXERCISED Provides supervision to Pages, Library Assistants, Acquisition Assistants, Technical Service Clerks, Library Associates, Reference Assistants, and Librarian I classification.

- The supervision includes, work schedules, assists with employment decisions, and employee evaluations. GUIDELINES LPL policies and procedures, position descriptions and site specific practices.

-CONTACTS LPL staff, employees and supervisors, library users, vendors, professional organizations and associates, and community groups.

- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS Note: This job description reflects Lexington Public Librarys assignment of essential functions for this particular job; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned at a later date or as may be needed.

- Manages or assists manager in the successful operation and function of a branch or library unit. Serves as manager in the absence of the branch/department manager.

- Performs readers advisory, reference interviews, and various professional customer services.

-Plans, develops, and implements continuing and special programs for the branch library or unit to which assigned; explains program requirements to staff and trains them in techniques and procedures; promotes library programs and events.

- Provides cost-effective acquisition practices.

- Orders all adult materials, verifies order information, coordinates orders, checks files to prevent duplication, coordinates visits with book vendors. Verifies orders, selects vendors, monitors performance.

-Creates on-order bibliographic records for all library formats. Prepares program publicity information for Marketing Department.

- Establishes and maintains contact with community leaders and organizations, and modifies Library services consistent with community and public needs and established LPL policy.

- Selects books and materials for addition to the collection; weeds existing book, sound recordings, and other collections; and evaluates gifts for addition to the collection.

- Monitors use and request for equipment and supplies; arranges for their proper custody and use. Participates in interviewing, selecting and training new employees.

-Prepares periodic statistical reports. Attends and participates in staff meetings. Maintains an awareness of developments in the profession.

- Performs related duties as required, or assigned.

Qualifications/Experience:

 

-Write documents and handouts fQualificationsThorough knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials and practices, especially as they relate to the field of specialization in which work is performed.

- Thorough professional knowledge of reader interest levels, books and authors, periodicals and pamphlet materials, and library guides and publications.

- Administrative ability and ability to supervise, train, evaluate and discipline professional, paraprofessional, and clerical staff.

- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

- Ability to maintain booking and accounting records for acquisition.

-Ability to effectively promote community interest in the field or department of specialization, or in the services provided by a library unit.

-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, library customers, and various external clients.

-Ability to work with the public for extended periods of time, maintaining a positive, pleasant demeanor and providing friendly, courteous services to library patrons.

- Ability to work without sitting for a minimum of two hours, and during that time is able to move with reasonable speed to locations throughout the work place in order to accomplish public service duties.

-Ability to operate a computer efficiently.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING Possession of a masters degree in library science (MLS) from an ALA accredited program and some responsible experience in professional library work, including some supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Certificate of Librarianship issued by the Kentucky State Board of Certification of Librarians.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES Sufficient mobility and dexterity to secure books and other library materials.

- Ability to perform essential functions which require bending, standing, stooping and lifting moderately heavy boxes of books, and standing for long periods.

-Work is often performed in and around books, shelves, and computers requiring adherence to industry safety procedures and guidelines.
