Continuing Education
Registration Form: Promoting Library Services Using Blogs and RSS

Course Description

Blog? What is a blog!? You may have heard some of your patrons or co-workers mentioning this term and wondered what they were talking about. A blog is a web page made up of usually short, frequently updated posts that are arranged in reverse chronological order like a "what's new" page or an online journal. Libraries are using blogs to keep patrons up to date on library events, staff picks, and news. Over two days, you will be introduced to a FUN and EASY way to create a blog for your library using one of the free services available. You will also learn to jazz up your new blog with a little HTML, and explore other technologies such as news/information syndicators (RSS), wikis and podcasting. After this online class, not only will you know what your patrons and co-workers are talking about, but you will have the knowledge and ability to create a blog, read RSS feeds and use both to promote your library services.

This class consists of two 2-hour sessions.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define terms relating to blogging and RSS
  • Evaluate blogs based on features, design elements and content
  • Build a blog from the ground up
  • Edit your blog using basic HTML
  • Create and use an aggregated news feed (RSS)

Registration to this free of charge class is limited to two people from each library system. If you were paying for this session it would cost $170 per person. Registration will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
